Festival of Lights- A Larger Than Life Christmas Tradition

Make it a Christmas tradition by visiting the Festival of Lights in Shelbyville, Ill. This small central Illinois town boasts of one of the greatest light work displays in the Heartland. The magic comes alive in the lighted faces of children of any age.

Larger than life animated displays illuminate the night sky. Forest Park is transformed into a magical wonderland of cheer and laughter. Over-sized swans swim gracefully around a sparkling water fountain. A train full of presents pulls into the depot. Decorated horses dance around a carousel as a giant Ferris Wheel lights up the night sky. A fisherman is out to catch the "Big One," while elves play tennis nearby.

Northern exposure is alive in residents from the polar cap. Penguins surround their village of igloos. A polar bear roams through the north woods. Another bear hangs out near the North Pole. Stars of many colors light up this polar north station.

Peace and Love show the true meaning of Christmas. The baby Jesus lays tucked away in a manger surrounded by Mary and Joseph. Trumpeting angels play songs of glory. The wise men are travelling on camels as palm trees sway in the night. Peace on Earth is the theme tonight.
A reflection of this quaint town is displayed throughout the festival. A row of Victorian mansions replicate actual Civil War era homes from Shelbyville. The historic 1880 county courthouse is recreated in this wonderland. Even the turn of the century Chatauqua Building has been transformed into a magical over-sized carousel!

Familiar characters from classic stories have taken residence here. An overgrown Frosty the Snowman waves as you pass by. Tin soldiers stand at a clock tower. Enormous candy canes and lollipops light the way as elves toss packages overhead. Meanwhile, santa flies over a super-sized stocking overflowing with treats.

Take a trip to simpler times as you journey through this free family event. Tune into the local station 98.3 to listen to Christmas music. After the event, drive up the brick streets of Broadway. See the history that Shelbyville has to display. Stop by Druby's on Main Street. It is a classic burger joint where you may find the owner at the grill. Get a fresh cooked burger, fries and a shake. Enjoy your larger than life Christmas tradition!
